Hello again! We have developed a fresh green neon glowing webiste for Lanner’s cafe as the old design was… well, old! The gamers out there don’t like to look at the same design for long. Good for us! If they want a makeover, any day soon we are happy to deliver! The new webiste is heavily jQuery-ed and AJAXified so it has a high wow! effect.

Anyway, recently I went to visit the famous Msida establishment (Lanner’s cafe) and it is so cool and hot, I got a great feel of the gaming experience. Darkie and the crew from the Lanner’s cafe were the creative forces of the website’s makeover and they transfered some of the true life image of the cafe with the green neon glow elements. In the real cafe there are computers lined like soldiers on the ceiling and they are mean and green! Badass gamers, dare to face the green grinning computers?

Still, I am doing it very professionally. I also designed a business card for myself, it is clean and simple just like I am not (simple).

The following two introduction passages are completely independent and lead to the same conclusion. You can choose one or read it all. You can also skip the reading and enjoy the sight of a Monty Python’s foot.

Intro number two: your web page is a little piece of you. It has a head (header), a body and a foot (footer)! Nobody knows why these little extensions of ourselves have only one foot. Really!

Intro number one: once upon a time there was a very important letter. It was not much different than other important documents around the world. It had a footer! This meant there was only one foot and basicaly no walking or running capacity. It was entirely dependent on a postal service. To cut the story short, there was no happy ending! This letter was lost in mail. Maybe one day, in 40 years somebody will receive this long lost letter and the big secret will finally be revealed. Mario will find his daughter that was put to adoption by a clerical error. He spent his life hoping and praying and it finally came true. The power of love!

Let’s continue.

The other day I was putting together the images for header and “footer” that you can now see on this website.

The idea is very simple, head + er = header. While I was doing the footer I first put two feet in the picture and then realized that it would be wrong to put two feet in a footer, it was not a feeter. How can that be true? How does a document get from A to B without having both feet? I did not come up with a concept of feet in documents. I just realized this concept was faulty with one outstanding foot that nobody cared about except me!

How do you expect your documents to stand, walk, run and get to the point with just one foot? Everybody knows that you need at least two feet. Thus, footer is to become feeter because it travels better.

I am starting the Feeter Revolution and you can join or support me. I would be happy if people joined to change this foot injustice. Save the outstanding foot! I am putting two proud feet in my feeter to start the feet revolution in web design.

Web pages usually come with two feet. Sometimes an accident happens or a page goes to war and it may be left footless or the page is so old it needs more than two feet for walking. I am not talking about these cases that are clearly exceptions to the two feet rule.

Thank You!

The last version of PHP4 was released yesterday and as of today, 08/08/08, the official support for all PHP4 versions have ended. PHPDeveloper.org has already aggregated the PHP community response to this fact.

This is excellent for many reasons that have been discussed for quite a long time, since the initial releases of PHP5 and I will not go into it. It will also make those hosts that are still running on PHP4 migrate to hopefully the latest stable version PHP5.2.

Generally, PHP5 preserves backward compatibility with PHP4 so in theory the applications should not be broken.

In reality, problems could happen after migration also because the host administrators compile PHP with options different from those on which previous version was running or disabling some extensions which were enabled in previous version and your application is using them. Unfortunately, this does happen and I have experienced it. This is not critical in a sense that if it happens, you should first contact the technical support and ask them to enable those extension(s), and then it is all in their hands. All it takes is uncommenting a couple of lines in php.ini file and restarting the web server.

Jeffrey Zeldman posted a teaser in his daily report announcing another web design survey by A List Apart.

33,000 web developers took part in the first annual survey done in 2007 and I can only assume that this one will reach the new heights. Web-standards community is growing and actions like this help this growth too. If you are a web developer, wait for 29th of July, take part and spread the word.

Web standards in Malta are still taking baby steps. Some popular websites do get elements that are in the current trends in web-standards aware community on the net, but you will rarely find one having valid (X)HTML and CSS. The state of web standards on Maltese web design scene deserves much more attention and analysis than can fit in this post and I will leave it for some other time. Stay tuned.
